15 Unwritten Gym Etiquette Rules Everyone Should Know

Nobody hands you a rulebook when you sign up for a gym membership. But there are unwritten rules that every gym-goer is expected to follow. Break them, and you'll earn silent (or not-so-silent) judgment from every regular in the building.

Here are the 15 gym etiquette rules that will make you a better gym citizen.

RULE 1

Re-rack Your Weights

This is the golden rule. If you take plates off the rack, put them back when you're done. If you use dumbbells, return them to their spot. No exceptions. Ever.

RULE 2

Wipe Down Equipment After Use

Sweat happens. But leaving a puddle on the bench for the next person is not okay. Most gyms provide spray bottles and paper towels. Use them.

RULE 3

Don't Hog Equipment

Sitting on a bench scrolling through your phone for 5 minutes between sets? During peak hours, that's selfish. If the gym is busy, keep your rest periods reasonable or let someone work in.

RULE 4

Let People Work In

If someone asks "Can I work in?" the answer should almost always be yes. Working in means alternating sets on the same equipment. It's efficient and respectful.

RULE 5

Don't Stand in Front of the Dumbbell Rack

Grab your dumbbells and step back. Doing curls 6 inches from the rack blocks everyone else from accessing the weights. Take two steps back. That's it.

RULE 6

Don't Give Unsolicited Advice

Unless someone is about to seriously hurt themselves, keep your coaching to yourself. Most people don't want form tips from a stranger. If they want help, they'll ask.

RULE 7

Use Headphones

Nobody wants to hear your music, podcast, or phone call. Headphones are mandatory. Playing audio through your phone speaker in a gym is a cardinal sin.

RULE 8

Don't Slam Weights (Unnecessarily)

Controlled negatives are part of good training. Dropping dumbbells from shoulder height after every set of curls is just performative. There are legitimate reasons to drop weights (heavy deadlifts, failed reps), but doing it for attention isn't one of them.

RULE 9

Respect Personal Space

If someone is squatting and the rack next to them is open, don't set up 12 inches from their face. Give people room. The gym isn't a subway.

RULE 10

Don't Record People Without Permission

Filming your own sets is fine. But make sure other people aren't in your frame — or ask them first. Nobody signed up to be in your Instagram story.

RULE 11

Keep Your Phone Calls Outside

The gym floor is not a conference room. If you need to take a call, step out. A 10-minute phone conversation on the leg press is disrespectful to everyone around you.

RULE 12

Don't Reserve Equipment with a Towel

Draping a towel over a machine and leaving for 10 minutes doesn't mean it's "yours." If you're not using it, it's available. First come, first served.

RULE 13

Use a Towel on Shared Surfaces

Sit on a towel when using benches and machines. It's more hygienic for everyone, and it shows you care about the shared space.

RULE 14

Be Mindful of the Mirror

Mirrors aren't for vanity — they're for form checking. Don't stand between someone and the mirror when they're mid-set. They might be watching their technique.

RULE 15

Be Friendly (But Read the Room)

A nod, a smile, a "nice set" between rounds — that's great. A 15-minute conversation with someone who has headphones in and is mid-superset? Read the room. Some people are there to socialize; others are on a mission.

The One Rule That Covers Everything

Leave the gym better than you found it. Re-rack the weights. Wipe the bench. Be aware of others. That's it. If everyone did this, every gym would be perfect.
